“Red” by Datarock – Album Review

4 09 2009

datarock_red_204Immediately, the robotic intro of the first track “The Blog” reminds me of a scene in “Revenge of the Nerds.” It’s an interesting song filled with interview samples and fuzzy broadcasts, somewhat an ode to viral marketing and the effects of social media on the music industry. I definitely heard a lil Miami Vice in the second track “Give It up,” a shake your ass dance anthem sure to glisten dance floors everywhere with sexy beads of sweat.

Datarock has a keen way of delivering vivacious music that is a bit cheesy, but oh so fuckin’ cool. With colorful swirls of disco beats lightly coated with new wave instrumentals, “Red” can also transcend into childlike melodies while rolling out those funky rock n’ roll riffs. By far, Datarock brings forth a rhythmic album full of delicious diversity and pure excitement.

Pros: “Dance” radiates an utter cheesiness so hot that it melts your face off in the coolest fuckin’ way. Featured in almost every John Hughes 80’s teen flick, “Molly” is a sweet yet funny ballad in the name of Molly Ringwald. Just about every boy’s teen wetdream.

Con: Can we move on from the red tracksuites to perhaps a pink set? Goes well with the effervescent cheesy theme.
