Jay Reatard’s Band Quits On Him!

6 10 2009

jay-reatardYep! You read the headline correctly. Apparently Jay Reatard and his band must have had some sort of falling out! This is what he tweeted this morning:

“”Band quit! Fuck them! They are boring rich kids who can’t play for ahit anyways … Say hello to your ugly and boring wifes opps I mean lifes guys suck it.”

Well, that kind of sucks, I rather liked his burly bandmates. Good news for other thrashing musicians seeking work though. Now that Jay Reatard’s bassist Stephen Pope and drummer Billy Hayes have quit the band, Reatard is currently looking for new band members. Another good thing: No upcoming tour dates have been canceled.

I’m very interested to see who will replace the two and exactly why Pope and Billy quit the band. I’ve heard some stories from other musicians who have toured with Reatard and he can be quite the chaotic handful. But hey, it’s all fun and games isn’t it?

*UPDATE*
Wanna play in Jay Reatards band. Here’s his email. He gave it out in a tweet this evening. If you got the shredful goods, bring it.

“So who wants to see just how terrible it is to play in my band . I mean its so so hard I promise its the worst 🙂 Jayreatard@gmail.com”

“Watch Me Fall” by Jay Reatard – Album Review

11 08 2009

jay-reatardJay Reatard is probably one of the coolest things to come out of Memphis. With his latest album “Watch Me Fall” set to drop on Aug. 18, this kinetic garage rocker is also packing heat with yet another tight tour schedule that kicks off Aug. 14. Except for this tour lasts three crazy months!

With 12 tracks of explosive garage punk, Reatard’s “Ain’t Gonna Save Me” opens the album up with a pleasing familiar sound. The popular track was made available as a FREE download back in May and left fans with a needy thirst for more fun, electrical tracks. “Watch Me Fall” and like much of Reatard’s music has an early 80’s aesthetic fluid with various new wave influences yet boasting a bad boy punk appeal from ‘74.

“Can’t Do It Anymore” gets pretty intense with some screeching guitar riffs towards the end. It’s like nails scratching on a chalkboard and might just blow an ear drum or two out live. Conversely, it gets a lil sweet and slow with “I’m Watching You.” Somewhat a romantic ballad, with mid-tempo instrumentals, this song would’ve been perfect for a slow-dancing prom scene in one of those awesome John Hughes flicks. In the same turn, the following track “Wounded” has a happy-go-lucky intro and chorus. A bit different from most of Reatard’s slammin’ resume, but there’s still some incessant shouts between the lyrics that point out his dismay of another’s apathy.

With its boisterous mix of songs orchestrated to keep that blood pumpin,’ “Watch Me Fall” has the kind of new album magic that every musician seeks: to have listeners keep that shit on repeat!

Ink N Iron 2009 Photos and Video

8 06 2009

ink-n-iron-09 073Ink N Iron went off this past weekend, June 5 – 7, at the Queen Mary in Long Beach, Calif. Tattoos, live bands, classic car show, sexy burlesque and more, the event was a great time. Considering it was an eventful weekend, I was only able to attend Saturday, the night The Sonics headlined and what a fuckin’ great day it was. A bit hungover from the bachelorette party I attended the night before, I opted to stay sober at Ink N Iron—was actually quite easy considering I don’t drink nearly as much as I used to.

There was tons of foxy pin-up girls and hot rockabilly boys. There’s was also some interesting looking people there of the less attractive persuasion. Great people watching! While exploring the massive Queen Mary we got lost a few times. That shit is haunted and I felt chills ride up my spine more than once. “Shining” like corridors, empty event rooms, swinging doors, scary boiler rooms—I loved it!

Amongst the mass tattooing going on in the expo hall and sideshow attractions through out Sin Alley, 60’s soulful garage band The Sonics was the highlight of the night. These guys fuckin’ rocked out as though “Boom” had just been released. Jammin’ on the sax, organ, harmonica, drums, guitar, bass—with Lil Richard like vocals giving us that dirty rock n’ roll howl, these guys still got it going on! With a classic movie poster of “Angels Hard As They Come” adorning stage-right, The Sonics rocked the crowd with “Have Love Will Travel,” “Boss Hoss,” “Cinderella,” “Psycho,” and the OG rock n’ roll anthem, “Louie, Louie” (just to name a few). The annoying hipster kids went wild once “The Witch” came on into play. I closed the night meeting The Sonics and shootin’ the shit with them for a hot minute. These guys are awesome and such a huge influence on the garage rock of today.

Check out the Photo Galleries page for some pics and footage of the event.

Download Jay Reatard’s New Song for FREE!

3 06 2009

jay-reatardJay Reatard’s new song, “Ain’t Gonna Save Me,” is rad! Totally diggin’ this fun song, very 70’s punk/new wave, reminds of something Devo would have played. If all the songs on his new album “Watch Me Fall” are going to be as good as this one, I’m sure Mr. Reatard will soon become the big headliner, and not the opener. Download “Aint Gonna Save Me” for free at spin.com.

The Ettes – Danger Is

11 05 2009

The-EttesI’m still pondering how it took me some five years to hear about this bad ass band, The Ettes. I came across their new EP, Danger Is just a couple weeks ago, featuring guitar God and epic crooner Dan Auerbach on two of their tracks. You can hear Auerbach’s fuzzy basslines that so easily complement the hard sound of “No Home.” While on “Lo and Behold” Auerbach twiddles those guitar strings with his magic touch. Consisting of three more tracks, two of which are live, The Ettes leave you with a mean craving for more of that vivid sound.

Representing as a bangin’ beat-punk band, reminiscent of early 70’s punk with a touch of mod and some rockin’ blues, you’ll even hear the harmonica go up against the thrashing rifts and incessant drumming; it’s quite the medley. Their prior album, Look at Life Again Soon is outstanding song-for-song. I’ve taken quite the liking to “You Can’t Do That To Me.” It’s been on repeat on all of my players. This former NYC threesome can sure put together some vicious tunes fit to wow the music snobs in the city they now reside,  LA.

The heavy bass and drums, combined with front woman, Coco’s sexy sultry voice, makes The Ettes stand apart from most female fronted bands today that tend to play more with keyboards and drum machines of the electro persuasion. Love both styles, but The Ettes are just a little more raw and a little more punk. It’s like Nancy Sinatra teaming up with The Stooges.
